CAAA Official Press Release - Iraq War Prayer Vigil

Christian Action Against Apathy (CAAA)
Contact: Joshua Holmes Email: joshuatheanchor@gmail.com Web: http://ctriplea.org
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CAAA IRAQ WAR PRAYER WALK VIGIL Saturday, March 21, 2009 in Downtown Nashville
On Saturday, 21st March 2009 Christian Action Against Apathy (CAAA) will be leading a one hour walk starting at the Parthenon Building in Centennial Park at 11:00 am. The walk will proceed along Broadway, 7th Avenue and on to the Legislative Plaza. It has been a year since the CAAA team and concerned members of the public held a prayer walk and vigil to mark their acknowledgment of the ongoing sacrifice of troops billeted to Iraq and the massive loss of life on both American and Iraqi sides.
Since the war began in March 2003, around 31,054 American troops have been wounded both in combat and during daily duties, a toll that continues to climb. There was much anticipation for the new administration’s promise to withdraw most of the troops through a 16 month phased procedure. However, it is now becoming apparent that things may in fact take up to 19 months now, with 30,000 to 50,000 U.S. troops to remain posted in the Middle East a little while longer. When we consider that for the first time since the war began the number of American Servicemen and women committing suicide has matched that of American civilians, we are reminded that the wounds are not only physical. And perhaps more sadly these figures do not even take into account the Iraqi deaths, which are said to range from 90,777 to 99,120.
It is with this information and knowledge that CAAA has partnered with The Anchor Fellowship Church, which is located on 3rd Ave South in downtown Nashville, to pray for and remember those who are suffering, whether they are in the field or the families who have been left behind.
Some may argue this is too much politics for a church or anyone to get involved in. However, it is not policies and strategies that are being highlighted here, but the human cost to yet another prolonged, mindless and bloodthirsty war.
This Walk of peace is open to all, regardless of religious or political beliefs.
CAAA is associated with The Anchor Fellowship, located in downtown Nashville. 629 3rd Avenue South, Nashville, TN 37210. Call (615) 733-0522 for details. For more information about this and other CAAA events, please visit the Christian Action Against Apathy website at http://ctriplea.org.

The Harbor: Refugee Ministry Training

Training for The Harbor, a refugee sponsorship program
Sunday, February 15, 2009
1:00 - 3:00 PM
at The Anchor Fellowship
629 3rd Avenue South - Nashville, TN - 37210
Julia Kevon and World Relief will be giving a short training for those interested in volunteering to work with refugees in the Nashville area. Volunteer opportunities may include teaching English, helping with household tasks (how to pay bills, use appliances, clean an apartment, drive a vehicle, etc.), tutoring students, or being on call to move new families into apartment homes.
You can plan the times that you help around your schedule. We encourage you to co-sponsor a family with your spouse, family, roommates, home group, or friends. The purpose of this ministry is to use your community to provide a support for people who are new to the United States.

Refugee Ministry Mission Statement
The Harbor
A Ministry of CAAA and The Anchor Fellowship
“Learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.” –Isaiah 1:17
This is more than just a good idea. This is a commandment from God. The Harbor exists so the church can actively and practically live out God’s mandate to be a voice for the voiceless, a friend to the friendless, and to look out for those who need a helping hand. When refugees enter our country, they are faced with a wall of obstacles - a new language, a different culture, job searches, driving tests, new schools, and a lifestyle that may be completely different from the one they previously knew.
The Harbor is here not only to help these refugees, but to befriend them. We believe these relationships go both ways, and want to not only be a part of their lives, but have them be a part of ours. We welcome these new friends into our community, for community provides a safe harbor from loneliness and vulnerability.
“If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!” – Ecclesiastes 4:10
The Harbor facilitates partnerships with refugee families who have been grandfathered out of resettling programs. We organize groups within the church to visit, eat with, assist, and be friends with these families. The Harbor offers free training through World Relief to equip volunteers to practically and effectively connect with the families in need.

Christian Action Against Apathy: The First Post
Welcome to the CAAA blog! Check here often for events, service opportunities, and educational links on social justice issues and current events. Here is what CAAA is all about:
Christian Action Against Apathy, or CAAA, is the social justice arm of The Anchor Fellowship. CAAA is involved in local, national, and international efforts to extend the hand of Christ to those in need.
In Isaiah 1:17, God says, "Learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow."
This is why CAAA exists. We believe that God has called the church to love, protect, and advocate for the "least of these." Furthermore, we believe the church needs to be a voice for the voiceless, seek justice, and encourage those who are oppressed. We strive to do this in many ways:
HELPING THE HOMELESS: CAAA is involved with monthly homeless outreaches and hosts a food pantry at The Anchor Fellowship.
SERVING THE POOR: CAAA and The Anchor Fellowship partner with First Wesleyan Church to serve meals and hand out free groceries to residents in a low-income neighborhood in East Nashville.
STANDING FOR HUMAN RIGHTS: We engage in peaceful protests to stand against social injustices.
EDUCATING OUR COMMUNITY: We hold monthly documentary nights, host a radio show discussing biblical views on current events, and are starting community classes to educate those in our community on issues like nutrition and healthcare.
HELPING REFUGEES: CAAA is starting a refugee sponsorship program called "The Harbor," through which we can be a friend to those who are seeking refuge from hardships and persecution. CAAA also links with HUMANKIND thrift store, located in The Anchor, to provide school uniforms for refugee children.
RESPONDING TO NEED: CAAA also ahs other ministries to support their work in human rights and helping the poor.
If you'd like to become involved with CAAA, check this blog for opportunities, join our Facebook group, or send us a message on MySpace!
